N regard to Baltimore and manufacturers, we say unhesitatingly that it is the PLACK OF places for factories, and we ofifer a few facts in proof. .
Take, for instance, the cost of site— tlie opportunity for seenriiiR ideal sites — tlie facilities for transportation by land an«l Ttater — tlie clieapness of fnel and many otlier features, there is no other city in the country offers such inducements for tlie establishment of fac- tories of all kinds as Baltimore does. Thousands of acres of subur- ban land, as well as cheap sites within the city in connection Trith the inducements of transportation and the ease ■»vith which indus- trious worlvmen may secure cheap permanent homes near to their place of occupation, all invite your earnest attention. In some great lines of manufsicturing- Baltimore already lias the most extensive plants in the -^vorltl, and the reasons for their location liere are those Tt-hich have been stated as -^vell as many others not mentioned.
FOR the homcseeker Baltimore has many advantages peculiar to itself, all of which cannot but help to make it the ideal place for a home.
In the next fe^- years Baltimore will spend over $.">O,O0O,0OO for improvements. It will have parks that cannot be surpassed for beauty and attractiveness. It will have a tire department the equal of any in the land. It will have smooth pavements and fine school- houses. It has the finest markets in tlie world and the busiest. Tliese are of vast importance to the home builder, as they enable him to procure the freshest of vegetables and fruits and all other food of land and sea at lowest possible prices. Again, Baltimore is a city of HOMES, and while the building of ne^v and fine apartment houses in Baltimore is upon a great scale, the increase in the erec- tion of dwellings, which have a low rental, is far in proportion. Whole' blocks of «lwelliiigs of two, three and four stories, most of them of the smaller kind, spring up as if by magic in the most Jit- tractive sections of tlie city. IVever before has there been such si rapid addition of iie«' dwellings, and the real estate men inform us ALL, WITH POPULAR PRICE RENTS. You can't make a mistake if you come to Baltimore and make your home.
FOR the tourist Baltimore is, with the possible exception of Xew York, the most interesting and historic city in the United States. We mention below a few places that you must not fail to see.

Then Baltimore has many other advantages. Within an hour or t^vo's run there are a half «lozen large cities and interesting and historic points -n'hich the tourist could see in a day, returning to Baltirsiore in the evening.

TO the great 13altimore public we wish to extend our thanks for its hearty co-operation with us in our efforts to publish in Baltimore a City Directory which shall be in keeping with New and Greater Baltimore.
R. L. POLK & CO., OF BALTIMORE,
Publishers.
WE wish to make special mention to the many readers of this book of our advertising section — pages 1317 to 1516 — placed directly in the center of this book. If the great Baltimore public will "get the habit" of turning to these pages when they want to find out where they can buy a certain article or who they can get to do a certain piece of work they will save themselves much time and worry and w-ill be as- sured of getting only the best from any of the people whom they find rep- resented on these pages.
THINK IT 0\VA<.
\\'e also wish to call attention to the wide circulation which our Baltimore City Directory has, and we know that the puTilic will then feel amply repaid for the trouble and pains that they have gone to in assisting us to compile this work.
In practically every city in the United States of 50,000 inhabitants and over our City Directory will be placed on file for the use of all the people in that city, and in addition to this the publishers liave this year made arrangements to place a ropy of our 1906 Baltimore City Directory into practically all towns of any im- portance in the entire South absolutely free of charge, covering every state from the .\tlantic Coast west to the Mississippi River, and from Maryland south to the (julf of Mexico.
We feel assured that the placing of this index to our city into the midst of the great Sf^aith cannot but help to be of great advantage in bringing Baltimore closer to the South and in making the ties which bind them together another link stronger.
We shall endeavor from year to year to continue to place our City Di- rectory throughout the South and to in every way possible educate the Southern people to the knowledge that these Directories are placed there for their use in order to get them closer and better acqtiainted with our city, which i'^ the natural distributing point for that entine country.
The people of these towns are prone to judge our city by our City Directory, so let us all endeavor to make it the best City Directory in the United States and a crff'it to Raltiniorc

Baltimore City
Street Directory.
Revised and Corrected Up to March 1st, 1906.
By the decimal system of numbering houses one hundred numbers are allotted to each square, commencing at CHARLES STREET running- EAST and WEST and at BALTIMORE STREET running NORTH and SOUTH. All other streets not commencing at either of the above points are numbered in accordance with tnls system. By this system Even Numbers are invariably found on the North and WfSl side of Streets, and Odd Numbers on tlie South and Ea.st side. The toliow- ing classification and arrangement of Streets forms a diagram for each Street, giving its starting noint. intersections and numbers, and will be found of great utility in finding special locations. From this list the location of any number on a Street can be ascertained; as, for instance, wishing to know ai what part of Dolphin Street No. 317 comes, look at Dolphin Street and you will find that Linden Avenue runs from 303 and Eutaw Place 329, showing that No. 317 Dolphin Street is between Linden Avenue and Eutaw Place.
ABBREVIATIONS. — After the name of a Street, the word street is omitted; Al — alley, Av — avenue. Bldg — building, Ct — court, E — east. La — lane, N — north, PI — place. Rd — road. S — south, Sp — space, Sq — square, Ter — terrace, W — west, Whf — wharf.
